Care and Maintenance Tips for Fridge Water Filters

Most modern refrigerators come equipped with fridge water filters. Fridge water filters draw water from the incoming water line. They can remove chlorine, sediment and even dirt or rust that may be in the water. As a result, water that has gone through a fridge water filter not only tastes better, but also smells better.

Manufacturers of refrigerators take great care to ensure that fridge water filters do not take up too much room in the refrigerator, which could otherwise be devoted for storage space. You will normally find fridge water filters in the right-hand corner or behind the vegetable bin. However, the placement of fridge water filters does vary from one fridge to the next.

Each fridge water filter installed has a lifespan that is indicated in the refrigerator's manual. Usually, though, refrigerator manufacturers suggest that the filters be changed every six months for optimum results. In some refrigerators, an indicator light goes on to warn when it's time to replace the filter. In others, there a small trickle will become visible, signaling that the filter is clogged and need to be replaced.

It is actually quite simple to replace fridge water filters. It usually involves a simple pull or a clockwise "twist" to remove the filter. The instruction manual that came with the fridge should show more detail on the process as well as pictures or diagrams.

Shut off the water line before you remove or replace the fridge water filter. After replacing the filter, let the water run for about 15 minutes before drinking it. This will allow the filter to become moist and better able at filtering out impurities.

The fridge water filter needs to be flushed out from time to time. By flushing the filter, any fungi or bacteria that may have grown in the filter can be removed. It is particularly important to flush the filter if the refrigerator has not been used for over a month.

Since most refrigerators vary from one model to the next, so do their filters. Because of this, purchase only the right type of fridge water filter from an authorized dealer.
