Hard Water Filter: Removing Calcium and Magnesium in the Water

Hard water filters are effective for removing calcium and magnesium from water. Calcium and magnesium are responsible for clouding glasses, making pipes brittle and even causing the hair on your head to become sticky.

When water passes through limestone deposits, the water absorbs calcium carbonate, thus casing the water to turn hard. When hard water is boiled, the calcium carbonate settles at the bottom of the pot or pan, creating lime scales.

Hard water also reduces the life span of water lines. It also leaves white deposits around faucets and other water taps. Hard water also prevents the formation of rich lather and this makes it hard to wash clothes or your hair. Hard water also increase heating costs because of the white scales that form and cover the heating elements, limiting the efficiency of heating systems. While hard water is a problem in a residential setting, it can be devastating to a commercial operation because hard water can clog boilers and water lines.

Hard water filters are used to remove the calcium and magnesium from the water. These two elements are considered the second most important impurities present in water that should be removed (right after sediment).

Most hard water filters use softeners, which contain several chemicals that are designed to treat and remove the calcium carbonate from the water. The softeners in the hard water filters flush out the calcium, thereby turning the water into one that is good for washing, cleaning and drinking. Hard water filters are particularly needed in areas where there are large deposits of limestone rocks.

Like most other water filters, a hard water filter requires occasional maintenance. The filters must be flushed regularly to remove the calcium deposits. Furthermore, the cartridges or ceramic candles used by hard water filters should be replaced often to keep the water filtration system working efficiently.

If the hard water filter is not used for an extended period, the filter must be flushed out first before using it again. To do this, simply hold the candle under running water or connect the filter to a running water supply to clean it.
