The Different Types of Water Filter Systems

All water filtration systems work on the same basic principle: you put dirty water in and you get clean water out. This cleaning process is done with the aid of either a single filter or a combination of several filters. Some of the most common filter types used today are:

1. Charcoal filters -- Charcoal filters are some of the most common water filters used. Made from coconut husks that absorb the impurities present in water, charcoal water filters are used in nearly 95% of all water filters because they are simple to install, they are relatively cheap, and they can remove most of the toxins found in unpurified water. A charcoal filter needs replaced every six to nine months.

2. Reverse osmosis water filters -- A reverse osmosis water filter uses a very fine membrane that filters incoming water through an osmotic process. Such a water filter system can remove just about all particles from the water, even the good particles. The water that emerges from this water filtration system is completely pure.

3. Distiller water filters -- A distiller water filter is powered by electricity. It uses heat to bring water to boiling point. All impurities are left behind and the water vapor is then condensed back into a second clean container. The two big disadvantages to using this water filter system is the extensive amount of power it requires to clean water and the amount of time needed for the water to cool after it has been boiled.

4. Ionized water filters -- An ionized water filter works by splitting water into 70% alkaline and 30% acidic water using electrodes. The alkaline water is used primarily for drinking and is also a great antitoxin for the body. Acidic ionized water, on the other hand, is primarily used for bathing purposes.

5. Ultraviolet water filters -- An ultraviolet water filter uses ultraviolet light to kill bacteria in the water. Ultraviolet water filters are water filtration systems that are usually found in commercial settings where trained professionals are nearby to service the units.

6. Back flush water filters -- A back flush water filter is nearly identical to and works the same way as a charcoal water filter.

7. Magnetic water filter -- A magnetic water filter uses a magnetic field to rearrange the ions within the water as it flows through the water filtration system. However, the rearrangement of ions is not permanent; all the effects gained from such a system are only temporary.

8. Energetic water filters -- An energetic water filter is a filter that attach directly to the point where the water enters the house. An energetic water filter can somewhat soften the water, but it doesn't change the pH value or the charge of the water.

9. Pi water filter systems -- a Pi water filter system uses a combination of sand bed, charcoal, magnetism, mineral addition and FIR energetics. This water filtration system, even though similar in some regards to a countertop water filter system, also adds healthy minerals to filtered water. A Pi water filter system can be used for up to three years without needing any maintenance.
